Dr. K. Rajendran was someone whom everybody loved – his teachers, his colleagues, his students, his patients, his family and friends. Born into a rich family with high political connections yet he was the personification of humility, never showing his wealth or power. As a student doing his P.G. course at the MMC he was loved by his teachers because of his ready wit and his willingness to learn. If his co students wanted to represent any matter to the chief, Dr K.R. was asked to lead the delegation because he could get around the chief with his charm.
After his M.D., when he became Asst. Professor at the M.M.C. he was always the centre of activities, whether it was to run a flood relief camp or a delegation to lead the staff to meet the dean or D.M.E. He always wore sparkling white shirt and trousers and overcoat and was so meticulously groomed that when patients came to skin O.P. they will ignore the senior doctors and make a bee line towards K.R. whom they thought was the “big doctor” much to the amusement of the chief.
He was very popular with the students both UG and PG because he used to regale them with jokes and anecdotes and used to cheer them up when they were depressed. His loud laughter could be easily recognized by anyone entering the department.
He loved his family and though lost his wife very early; he never remarried although there were many contenders to that position since he was handsome, wealthy and humorous. He remained single and was both father and mother to his 2 daughters.
He was an active member of the IADVL and participated in all national and regional conferences and was an office bearer of the association until his untimely death when he was the Prof of dermatology at the KMC – a dept. which he expanded quickly due to his influence and enthusiasm.
Today Dr. K Rajendran is no longer with us but his memory lingers even when the sun is going down and rises in the morning we will remember him and this award instituted by his friends and well wishers will remain a testimony to his contributions to dermatology and perpetuate his memory.
